Well it makes sense to me that you can't hide it - it contains important drop down menus to perform tasks tailored to every application , so unless you have a keyboard shortcut for absolutely every task in every application, it would make working with the machine a bit difficult, wouldn't it? And I just checked every possible setting in System Preferences and couldn't find anything - maybe you saw one in an app with full screen mode; I don't ever use full screen - I got a 27" because I need room to have 2 to 3 windows open side by side when I work and full screen is just way too large on my 27" for my taste anyway.
